CAPTAIN Safiq Rahim and Safee Sali regard Malaysia's semi-final opponents Thailand as the strongest team in the AFF Suzuki Cup but believe their team can produce the unexpected and qualify for the final.
"I knew even before the tournament that we will reach the semi-finals. We are ready for any opponent at this stage and I am confident we can beat Thailand," said Safiq.
Malaysia qualified for the semi-finals following a 2-0 win over Indonesia on Saturday to finish second in Group B behind Singapore.
The national team will host Thailand in the first leg on Sunday before travelling to Bangkok for the return leg four days later.

"Thailand play a different system and are solid in all departments but as defending champions, we hold the edge. It was important for us to silence our critics and we did it by overcoming Laos and Indonesia for a spot in the semi-finals," added Safiq, who has signed with Johor FC for the upcoming M-League season.

Safee, the top-scorer of the 2010 edition with five goals, said Thailand are the most complete side in the tournament.
"They have strong attacking players and a formidable back-line. We played them in a friendly recently and lost 2-0 but it was only a test match. I promise you, it will be a different ball game when we face them on Sunday. We are now a far better side.
"In 2010, we hosted Vietnam and Indonesia in the first legs of the semi-final and final, respectively, and won both matches easily.
"We need to take this advantage as the hosts in the first leg," said Safee, the all-time Malaysian topscorer in the competition with eight goals.
Safee, 28, who plays in the Indonesian Super League, said Malaysia must work on proper tactics ahead of the first leg.
"We must work on our weaknesses. I believe we can only get better. I believe coach K. Rajagobal will come up with the best strategy," he said.

Meanwhile, Rajagobal could make changes if Khyril Muhymeen Zambri, S. Kunanlan (both groin) and Shakir Shaari (ankle) fail to recover from their injuries. The coach will test the trio in training today before deciding whether he should replace them. Safee is also down with a thigh strain
