How it All Began
Thirty years ago, Luitpold, Prince of Bavaria, great grandson of the last King of Bavaria, Ludwig III, fulfilled a royal dream: to stage a knights tournament with all the necessary trappings. With lances, swords, valiant steeds and shining armour, with flags and fanfare.
It all started in 1973. Prince Luitpold was a guest at a castle in Canterbury in South East England. While there, he visited a medieval tournament, which was taking place at the time. He was so impressed by the show that he hired the British Jousting Association on the spot to perform for the 800th anniversary of the House of Wittelsbach and the grand opening of the Ritterschwemme restaurant in Kaltenberg.
Kaltenberg Castle, situated on a wooded Celtic mountain and first officially documented in 1292, seemed the ideal spot for the event. The prince wanted to create a suitable setting for his Kaltenberg, a place to bring history to life.
In addition to the 14 swashbucklers from England, a group of local knights participated in the tournament, which was originally staged on an open field. The Bergknappen from Peißenberg (a marching band) also heeded the call of their lord. The first year, an impressive 5,000 visitors were entertained by a flea market, a crossbow competition and a marching band contest. By the end of the tournament, even the supplies of food & drink ran low. He planned to stage the tournament every two years, said Prince Luitpold at the time.
The knights tournament evolved rapidly. The event fit the times, stated the prince, as many people felt the need to delve into the past to escape the plastic world surrounding them. In 1985, the tournament Arena and royal loge were built next to the beer garden.
Today, the tournament arena is surrounded by a market fair with artists, jesters, craftsmen, actors, jugglers, musicians, robber barons and many others. The princes dream has become the worlds biggest knights tournament.
